Leaky Gut Support Group
How’s Your Gut?
The phenomenon of a “leaky gut” has been abuzz lately, but do you know what it means or who should be concerned?
The digestive tract is where food is broken down, and nutrients are absorbed. When food moves through your system, the walls of your intestines act as barriers, controlling what enters the bloodstream to be transported to your organs to nourish and regulate the rest of your body.
Small gaps in the intestinal wall allow water and nutrients to pass through while blocking the passage of harmful substances, but when that wall becomes penetrable, bacteria and toxins can seep through into the bloodstream. These “leaks” in the intestinal wall is where the term “leaky gut” comes from, and symptoms can range from bloating and digestive issues to food sensitivities. It’s also believed that leaky gut is an underlying cause that contributes to all sorts of chronic conditions and diseases.
